Please take a moment to notice a particular entertaining detail: see the spot in the first picture where the wave is crashing up and over the rocks, just to the left (i.e. ahead) of the wave, there’s a bunch of little spray. That spray comes down in a way like those first big raindrops of a thunderstorm pattering into the tarmac. But instead of being followed by wind and a building storm over the next half hour, this heavy pattering of water drops is followed in a fraction of a moment by a few hundred gallons of icy bering sea. Now look at the second picture again. Thankfully I was kneeling, so a quick curl-into-fetal-position-around-the camera maneuver worked; no bruises and my camera seems to still work fine.

Well, I used to think that there was nothing like a great day of teaching to make me feel like a superhero, but alas it has been matched. While cruising over beautiful terrain in a helicopter, it’s easy to forget that I am not superman. And I get to cruise over beautiful terrain in a helicopter to go to the school where I teach. How am I this lucky??

Well, I never managed to catch any birds, but at least I got my anouvuk made semi-properly. Apparently hand tying each not is not the best way to make a net; there is a slick way to do it with a needle.

I love to make things. I love it more when I can use them to do something practical, like hunt for food! Unfortunately I have yet to master the art of birding. The little seabirds taste great though, so I’ll keep trying.
